Jean Dubuffet et la Tour aux figures

Une aventure monumentale

Musée Français de la Carte à jouer, Issy-les-Moulineaux, France
03-12-2025 / 28-06-2026

Forty years ago, in 1985, Jean Dubuffet chose the location for his highest sculpture, the Tour aux figures (Tower of figures). It will be on the Île Saint-Germain (Saint-Germain Island), in the city of Issy-les-Moulineaux, near Paris. To mark the anniversary of the chosen location, the French Museum of the Playing Card in Issy-les-Moulineaux is dedicating an exceptional exhibition to the Tour aux figures, from 3 December 2025 to 28 June 2026. Made in partnership with the Dubuffet Foundation, the exhibition retraces the history and construction of this monumental work with a wide selection of sculptures, drawings, paintings and a large number of archive documents, some of which have never been seen before.

Alfred Jarry and the arts

Musée Picasso, Barcelone, Espagne
27-11-2025 / 05-04-2026

This exhibition explores the figure of Alfred Jarry and his influence on 20th-century art and thought. The exhibition brings together works, books, graphic art, and drawings by Jarry alongside pieces by artists from his circle, such as Pierre Bonnard, Paul Gauguin, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, Charles Filiger, George Rouault, and the Nabis. It also highlights the impact that the playwright had on the Surrealists and on the artists of the Collège de Pataphysique, such as Jean Dubuffet and Enrico Baj. In addition, the exhibition also includes contemporary works by William Kentridge, which explore the relevance of the themes Alfred Jarry addressed in his play and its despotic, corrupt, and totalitarian characters. The exhibition concludes with a final section that examines the reception of his work in Catalonia.

Jean Dubuffet & Niki de Saint Phalle, Chassés croisés

Fondation Dubuffet, Paris, France
01-10-2025 / 13-02-2026

The Dubuffet Foundation presents ‘Jean Dubuffet & Niki de Saint Phalle, Chassés croisés’ from 1 October 2025 to 13 February 2026.

This exhibition explores key thematic intersections between Jean Dubuffet and Niki de Saint Phalle, focusing on their subversive approach to the female body, their experimentation with various materials, their distinctive treatment of landscape, and their shared ambition to create large-scale sculptural and architectural works. This dialogue is based on significant connections, for example Saint Phalle's early discovery of Dubuffet's work in Paris in the 1950s.

Organised in partnership with the Niki Charitable Art Foundation (NCAF), this unique confrontation brings together more than 60 works by Jean Dubuffet and Niki de Saint Phalle from public and private collections.

An exhibition catalogue is available and several events will be scheduled alongside the exhibition: meetings, conferences and a seminar.

The daily challenge

Jean-Louis Prat, Thomas Wierzbinski et Déborah Lehot-Couette
Brioude, Le Doyenné, 2025

Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) defied all trends in modern and contemporary art. A relentless individualist who rebelled against fine arts and institutions, he fought against a suffocating culture all his life. Refusing to be categorised, Jean Dubuffet was a writer, painter, illustrator, printmaker, sculptor, architect and musician. His inventive work is marked by multiple experimentations.

Forty years after the retrospective exhibition at the Maeght Foundation, Jean-Louis Prat invites us to rediscover the work of this extraordinary artist who, from 1942 to 1985, never ceased to challenge himself to produce a deeply original work.

Through a rich selection of paintings, sculptures, prints and illustrated books, the exhibition entitled Jean Dubuffet: The Daily Challenge bears witness to the vitality and modernity of this unique body of work, which still manages to surprise us today.

Tour aux figures, Île-Saint-Germain, Issy-Les-Moulineaux
01-03-2024 / 30-11-2024

What role can monumental art play in the city? How did Jean Dubuffet redefine monumental art to engage with the city and its inhabitants?

These are the questions explored in this immersive and documentary sound piece about Jean Dubuffet's iconic ‘Tour aux Figures’. The project reveals the richness of this mysterious tower, located in the heart of the Ile Saint-Germain park, by combining sound recordings, personal stories and poetic narration.

The work offers a sensitive experience: a sonic journey through the spaces and materials of the tower, where the voices of visitors and the sounds captured on site interact with the architecture. It's an exploration that invites us to escape, to dream and to rethink our relationship with art and landscape.

This sound creation is available on all podcast platforms.
