Jean Dubuffet & Niki de Saint Phalle Monumental through the test of time

Event

Jean Dubuffet & Niki de Saint Phalle

Monumental through the test of time

ADAGP, 11 rue Duguay Trouin, Paris 6e, From 9h30 to 17h
11-02-2026

To mark the exhibition ‘Jean Dubuffet & Niki de Saint Phalle, Chassés croisés’ on display until 13 February 2026, the Dubuffet Foundation and the Niki Charitable Art Foundation are organising a symposium entitled ‘Jean Dubuffet & Niki de Saint Phalle: monumental through the test of time," in partnership with ADAGP. The event will take place on 11 February 2026 at ADAGP, as part of the exhibition's closing.

Jean Dubuffet and Niki de Saint Phalle were both multifaceted artists who worked in the fields of architecture and monumental sculpture. They created 32 and 45 works in public spaces around the world, 19 of which are located in France (11 by Dubuffet and 8 by Niki de Saint Phalle). Subject to the effects of time and environmental conditions, many of these works are now undergoing restoration.

Produced in close collaboration with official sculpture reproducers, these works reveal a paradox between creation and restoration. The practitioner's perspective, nourished by expertise forged in close collaboration with the artist, can today come into conflict with the approach and ethics of the restorer. How can this intimate knowledge of materials and experimental artistic processes be reconciled with contemporary restoration requirements? How can we restore without betraying, preserve without sanctifying? How can we intervene without altering the artist's original intention? This seminar aims to open up a space for reflection, addressing the place of technical memories and the role of artists' foundations in the preservation strategies for this extraordinary heritage.

The day will begin at 9:30 a.m. A visit of the exhibition ‘Jean Dubuffet & Niki de Saint Phalle, Chassés croisés’ at the Dubuffet Foundation will conclude the seminar at 5:30 p.m. The Foundation is located about a 15-minute walk from the ADAGP.
