Jean Dubuffet, the final years (1974-1985)

Fondation Dubuffet, Paris, France
16-04-2026 / 24-10-2026

From 16 April to 24 October 2026, the Dubuffet Foundation presents the exhibition ‘Pulsions. Jean Dubuffet, the final years (1974-1985)’, bringing together more than 150 works.

In 1974, after completing the Hourloupe cycle, Jean Dubuffet, then over 70 years old, began a new chapter in his creative life. During ten years of intense production, he explored new artistic avenues and navigated freely between figuration and non-figuration.

Between 1974 and 1985, he produced more than 1,500 paintings and 1,000 drawings, organised into twenty series. This late period bears witness to the freedom of gesture and constant audacity that characterises Jean Dubuffet's practice.

It also highlights the impact that the playwright had on the Surrealists and on the artists of the Collège de Pataphysique, such as Jean Dubuffet and Enrico Baj. In addition, the exhibition also includes contemporary works by William Kentridge, which explore the relevance of the themes Alfred Jarry addressed in his play and its despotic, corrupt, and totalitarian characters. The exhibition concludes with a final section that examines the reception of his work in Catalonia.

Drawing outside the lines

Masterpieces from the Centre Pompidou's collection

Grand Palais RMN, Paris, France
16-12-2025 / 15-03-2026

Over 300 works on paper from the Centre Pompidou’s graphic arts collection are on display at the Grand Palais from 16 December 2025 to 15 March 2026. The exhibition highlights more than 120 artists through a sensitive approach organized around four sequences: studying, narrating, drawing and animating.

Many artists have embraced this original and cathartic mode of expression to push the boundaries of art: beyond the sheet of paper or the traditional sketchbook, drawing extends to other media and opens up to other practices.

This is especially true of Jean Dubuffet, whose work is represented by a rich selection from the ‘Métro’ series. Jean Dubuffet experimented with tools, ranging from coloured pencils to markers, felt-tip pens and Indian ink, but he also explored numerous techniques, such as scraping, collage, engraving and lithography.

Jean Dubuffet & Niki de Saint Phalle, Chassés croisés

Fondation Dubuffet, Paris, France
01-10-2025 / 13-02-2026

The Dubuffet Foundation presents ‘Jean Dubuffet & Niki de Saint Phalle, Chassés croisés’ from 1 October 2025 to 13 February 2026.

This exhibition explores key thematic intersections between Jean Dubuffet and Niki de Saint Phalle, focusing on their subversive approach to the female body, their experimentation with various materials, their distinctive treatment of landscape, and their shared ambition to create large-scale sculptural and architectural works. This dialogue is based on significant connections, for example Saint Phalle's early discovery of Dubuffet's work in Paris in the 1950s.

Organised in partnership with the Niki Charitable Art Foundation (NCAF), this unique confrontation brings together more than 60 works by Jean Dubuffet and Niki de Saint Phalle from public and private collections.

An exhibition catalogue is available and several events will be scheduled alongside the exhibition: meetings, conferences and a seminar.
